There are many theories as to where t the word cocktail originated. Claims on the first records of its usage were in 1789 (England) and 1803 (U.S.). Moreover, the definition of cocktail as a “stimulating liquor, composed of spirits, sugar, water, and bitters” was said to appear in The Balance and Columbian Repository in 1806.
Regardless of its origin, cocktails are primarily known as drinks intended for the female market. Throughout the years, drinking as part of women’s lifestyle has slowly been welcomed by most societies all over the world.

In America, history shows that women started visiting ‘saloons’ from 1890-1920 prior to the Eighteenth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution in 1920, when alcoholic beverages where prohibited. During that time, men were confused on how to deal with ‘drinking women,’ thus a special room was allotted for the female market, wherein cocktails serve as the primary drinks.
Throughout the years, the list of different ladies’ drinks has grown. Four of the drinks that top women’s favorite cocktail fixes include:
- The Cosmopolitan – a mixture of vodka, cranberry juice, triple sec, and lemon juice
- Margarita – a tequila-based cocktail
